Dominga Clementina Perez Diaz requested a loan to purchase fabric, thread, and other goods to use in her sewing business. As you may remember, you helped fund her loan on Kiva in March. On Tuesday, we got the chance to check in with Dominga and see how things have been going with her loan and her business. We sat with her on the enclosed porch at the front of her house, which is also where she keeps her sewing machine.

With this loan, Dominga was able to cover the costs of the fabric she uses to make pillow cases, bed valances, and more. She showed us a stack of colorful, florid cloth, as well as some of her finished products. She is able to make two sets of these linens each week, working about three hours a day. She sells her goods both from her home and in other regions of Nicaragua. In addition to selling what she makes, she also repairs clothing for people in her neighborhood at a cost of 10 cordobas, or about 50 cents, per piece.

Dominga said that business has been good but she hasn’t been able to work much lately on account of the heat. Regardless, she was able to pay back her loan in full about 10 days ago – so be on the lookout for the rest of your repayment! – and she was headed to the bank that very afternoon, after chatting with us, to take out her next loan, for 12,000 cordobas, or about $600. She will use her next loan for her sewing business as well but will also put whatever is left over after she buys what she needs toward the construction of a room off to the side of her house, which she is hoping to be able to rent out.
