The following description was written by Moses Onyango, a volunteer with Village Enterprise Fund and partner representative for Kiva in Uganda:

Elizabeth Omalla is a widow with seven children in her family.

Village Enterprise Fund (VEF) donated 100 Dollar grant to her in the year 2000.

She started with a small business of selling greens, tomatoes, onions and cooking oil. He business continued well for a period of eight months as she realized some profits.

In 2001, VEF organized for business training course for all the beneficiaries in Tororo District. She happened to be among the participants who attended the training.

She learnt how to choose a profitable business, marketing, book keeping and business strategies.

She then decided to change her business to Fish Mongering.

Here she got a better market whereby the profit in her business has enabled her to buy goats, cow, pigs, chicken and also taking her children to school.

Given a loan of US $500, she will be capable of doing better business, by expanding her stock and also shift to Tororo town in order to meet the middle man for the progress of her business.

She is capable to handle the loan and to pay it back promptly.

Being a widow, I know that she will be helped a lot in development of her family.

The name of this bussiness is called Were Kinindi, meaning Our God doesen't sleep.

This has become true and reality to this bussiness for their God who doesen't sleep from no where, has given them good amount of money for business.

This group got 850,000 Shillings Ugandan money, thus equivalent to $500.

Fish mongering is one of the most paying bussinesses in Uganda.Because of tight economy and poverty, people eat fish more than meat for it is affordable.

This bussiness bought six huge baskets of fish at the lake landing site.

During Easter, they sold all the fish that they bought and yesterday they went to the lake for more fish.

The first lot gave them a very good profit that will enable them to expand the bussiness more and more.

These people are targeting their customers from various open market places in the villages around Tororo.

Customers are sure deal for this business.

I will continue to update you on the developements of this business.

On the behalf of Kiva staff, I want to thank all of you who contributed your money to support these active poorest of the poor Ugandans to eradicate the level of their poverty.

RE:June update

Fish in Tororo costs from 500 to 1,000 Ugandan shillings compared to a Kilogramm of meat that costs 2,500 Shillings.

Most people in the village go for fish for their families than meat because of the cheap price.

This has given advatage to this bussiness alot.

Now this bussiness can buy up to 10 buskets of fish right at the lake shores of Lake VICTORIA.Each busket costs 120,000 Shillings. It can take these people only one week to sell the ten huge buskets of fish.

Most of their customers are found in the villages and also they move around the village markets selling their fish.

They have to do the selling in a hurring way because there are dangers of some smoked fish going bad. They have not reported any loss of money through fish going bad. I thank God for this.

Right now they have three buskets remaining for sell from the last lot of purchase.

Thanks alot for your support to this people.
