This group, aptly named Tamaraneh II (a Temne phrase for “let’s help each other”), consists of two members: Mariama Jalloh and Marie Sesay. These entrepreneurs have already received four loans from Kiva through SMT, so this would be their fifth loan from SMT. They note that the previous loans had significant and beneficial impacts on their lives. As such, they are now requesting this loan in the amount of $425 (1,300,000 SLL) to enable them to further strengthen their businesses.

Mariama, pictured on the left, is the leader of this group. She is 48 years old, and she was born in Makeni in northern Sierra Leone. She is married to a businessman, and they have five children.

For over 20 years, Mariama has been in the business of selling market food. With the proceeds of this loan, she would like to expand her inventory; in particular, she would like to buy: four barters (note: five gallons equals one barter) of palm-oil; three bags of salt; two bags of sugar; three bags of flour; two bags of onions; three bags of rice; and one carton of tomatoes. Thus far, Mariama has never faced any major challenges with her business (i.e., the business has been operating very well), and she explains that she enjoys her work. Further, she states that the profits she expects to generate as a result of this loan will make her feel both good and happy. She plans to enter into a rotational savings group called Osusu so that she will save enough money to promptly repay her loan and to cover any emergencies that may arise.

About Group Loans
In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a group of individuals bound by a group guarantee. Under this arrangement, each member of the group supports one another and is responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members if someone is delinquent or defaults. Learn more
