Munhtuul Agvaan is a single mother with one daughter. They live with her parents, both of whom are retired. Her daughter is 15 and goes to high school. To feed her family, Munhtuul runs a retail business, selling "huurug" (a traditional Mongolian snuff case that is popular with well-to-do men made from semi-precious stones, with a band of gold or silver under the cap) at Narantuul, the biggest outdoor market in Mongolia. Her sister and brother-in-law help with her business. When she started the business, she would hire someone to travel to the Chinese border city of Ereen to buy the huurug containers in bulk, and would make the caps herself out of coral. These days, she goes to Ereen herself to buy huurug. Her dream is to establish her own huurug factory -- the first ever in Mongolia! Nowadays, she is working to expand her home workshop with her business profit. The loan she is requesting is to purchase huurug to increase her business inventory. She has taken loans from XacBank (Kiva's partner microfinance institution in Mongolia) three times before to expand her business. She has a very good credit history with the bank. In the picture, she stands on the right.

Dear Lenders

Entrepreneur: Munhtuul Agvaan
Location: Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

Munhtuul Agvaan is in the fourth month of her loan with no overdue payments. She is thankful to her lenders. Munhtuul spent her loan to increase her business inventory. Last February she went to Ereen, a border city of China and bought expensive natural stone to make huurugs (a traditional Mongolian snuff case made from semi-precious stones, with a band of gold or silver under the cap). Due to the Mongolian Lunar New Year in February, her business income increased. She earned 300,000 tugrugs of profit in Feb. With the profit, she bought kitchen furniture for her household needs. As summer approaches, many tourists will be visiting Mongolia. Munhtuul is expecting higher income from her huurug sales to tourists.
