Riaz M. Akhtar Bhatti Group

Riaz baji, a 32-year-old resident of Pakpattan, Pakistan, is married to M. Akhtar Bhatti, who has operated an electric shop selling tube lights, electric wires and switches for the back 10 years. The mother of two sons and two daughters, all students at a local school, Riaz baji pays their school fees from her income as a seamstress. She has repaid her first loan from Asasah (a microfinance institute of Pakistan) and is now requesting a new one to buy more items for her husband’s shop.

Riaz baji is a group leader of five other women in her locality:

Allah Muafi baji, Haleema baji and Razia baji each want a loan to buy donkey carts for loading;

Jannat baji is requesting a loan to buy vegetables for her vegetable selling business;

Bilquis baji wants a loan to buy fertilizer to sell.

The funds for this group loan will be distributed among the group members, each of whom will invest in her own business. The members guarantee one another's loans, so if someone does not repay, the other are responsible.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a group of individuals bound by a group guarantee.
