Alfredo Abilio Simango is 68 years old; he was born and raised in Machanga, a Sofala province. Alfredo had limited opportunities to attend school, because during colonial rule the indigenous population was not allowed to attend school above 4th grade level.

Since 1987, Alfredo has been working in agriculture. He owns a 12 hectare plot in the district of Boane.

In 2007, he heard about HLUVUKU-ADSEMA through friends. Alfredo learned more about the conditions for access to loans, and decided to request a loan in order to expand his farming area.

With the 25.000,00 MT loan, he intends to expand his maize farming area from 3 hectares to 6 hectares, to purchase seeds and fertilizers, and to clear and prepare plots, consequently increasing his production.

Alfredo currently employs 3 full-time workers. With the increase of his farming area he plans on hiring 3 more permanent workers, in addition to hiring temporary workers which will be needed when the work load so requires.

Alfredo’s activities have a great impact in his community because he generates work for 6 community members, and income for their families. His work also makes corn available for the local market and provides grains, in great quantities, for the Malanga market, located in the city of Maputo.

Update on Alfredo Abílio Simango's Kiva Business

Entrepreneur: Alfredo Abílio Simango
Location: Boane, Maputo, Mozambique

Sr. Simango has been in the agriculture business for over 10 years now and his 12 hectare of land is of impressive size and output. As this was Alfredo's first loan with Hluvuku-Adsema, he used this round of funding to buy potato and cabbage seeds in bulk, increased gas reserves for his water pump, and paid his five employees.

Alfredo is fortunate to have a tractor, a water pump, and a small pick-up in which to carry his crop output to market. Today, his main crops are potato, onion, cabbage, corn and a small plot for tomatoes. In these winter months potatoes provide Alfredo and his wife with the greatest profit.

The greatest costs for the business is lack of rain. Without rain, he must buy more gas to run his water-pump, and potatoes in particular require a great deal of water. Secondly, he must travel to the capital city Maputo (30km away) twice a week in order to sell his vegetables for a higher return at the market (where individuals then resell on the streets).

While the agriculture business ebbs and flows, all profits from the business are used to sustain the household costs where he, his wife, two children and two grandchildren live. In addition, he helps pay for the schooling of two of their other six children at Nampula University in the northern province of the country. The five employees also benefit from this business and sustain themselves and six kids between them.

In the future, Alfredo hopes to take a new loan in order to buy more corn seeds and increase his output from two tons to the lands four ton potential and stock up on more gas reserves before the price of gas goes even higher. His 27 year old son, Paolo, is apprenticing now and Alfredo hopes to turn over a sustainable business to him soon.
