This communal bank is called "Wayna Capac." This is the name of one of the heirs of the Inca throne, who in his governance extended the Incan empire to its maximum extent; he was called "el grande." The bank is located in the province of Urubamba, which is part of the department of Cusco, exactly one hour and 30 minutes from the city. This sector is called the sacred valley of the Incas, a place of generous and fertile lands, thus allowing the production of large, rich grains.

The associate members of this small bank of nine women and five men are enterprising people, desiring that the association offer them minimal backing in order to be able to continue supporting their families and to continue the tradition of cultivation as in the time of the ancient Peruvians, the Incas. These associates carry out various activities, the majority of which are agricultural. They produce organic vegetables, corn, beans, barley, artichokes, potatoes and dried grains among other products. For this reason they desire to invest their loans in the improvement of their raw materials, which are the seeds, and in the purchase of better animals, as they also raise small animals such as chickens, turkeys, ducks, guinea-pigs and rabbits in order to ultimately breed and sell them. Other associates will start some small businesses, such as to open a fast food restaurant, selling sandwiches, juices and kebabs.

These associates are thankful for the help received and undertake to repay the loan by the proper date. They truly value the support given, because in the rural areas of Peru, you often can't count on the help of the financial social bank.

Cleofe's Kiva loan

Entrepreneur: Wayna Ccapac Group
Location: Urubamba, Peru

I visited Cleofe Ochoa Condori, a member of the Wayna Ccapac Village Bank, near her home in the San Juan neighborhood of the city of Urubamba.

Cleofe buys and sells dried foods like corn, barley, quinoa and jora (a special type of corn used to make chicha, a traditional Andean fermented corn beer). She works as an intermediary, buying from local producers and then sending the dried foods off to the city of Cusco, where they are either sold in the market or sent off to other parts of Peru for sale. Much of the corn and barley consumed in the rest of the country is produced locally. Cleofe is 42 years old and has spent almost half of her life working in this business. She used her Kiva loan of 800 soles (US$240) to buy 280 kilos of white corn. Business was slow during the rainy months of January-March, she says, but is now picking up again. In May, usually one of her best months for sales, she typically earns 100 soles (US$30) in profits on market days (Wednesday, Friday and Sunday).

Cleofe has been participating in village banks through Asociacion Arariwa for about a year. Before joining the institution, she had never taken out a loan (though she did have a small savings account with another financial institution). She generally enjoys participating in group loans, she said, though during this particular loan cycle Wayna Ccapac has been having some problems. “The group isn’t very united,” says Cleofe. “Not everyone is responsible.” Several group members who were behind on their loan payments have left town, leaving the rest of the group to come up with that money each month or face becoming delinquent on their loan. Cleofe says that her loan officer, Rosario, is planning to help the more responsible group members form a new group at the end of this loan cycle; Cleofe plans to join that group. Her goal for the future is to buy a motorcycle taxi (one of the main forms of transportation in the city of Urubamba).
