Cathérine ADONOUGBO is 35 years old and is from Adjohoun. She is married to Félix DADJO, a driver for the ministry of culture and tourism. She is a mother with two children (a boy and a girl), who are both in school. No longer wanting to let her husband cope alone with the day-to-day household expenses, she has decided to use her almost-insignificant income to get started in the commerce of staple foods. This will also help her husband to ensure the best future for their children. For this, she acquires her goods at the local marketplaces outside the city of Cotonou. Upon returning from the market, she goes directly to TOKPA (the international market of Benin), where she delivers her goods to wholesalers and retailers, who in turn resell them at TOKPA. Let us note that staple foods cost more at TOKPA than at local marketplaces. Her business is continuously evolving, and this is why she is requesting a new loan to satisfy her customers.

Alidé means “there is always a path for the poorest” in Benin’s local language of Fon. Benin is a small West African country located next to Nigeria and has a per capita GDP of $1,500. Alidé offers special loans to highly vulnerable people at an interest rate of 0%. It is part of a group that is soon launching a micro health insurance program.
