Elisapeta is one of the old ladies in the Faleula Fou 4 Center. Despite her age, she works actively in the vegetable garden with the help of her husband. When the vegetables are ripe, Elisapeta and her children sell them to the village shops or at the market.

Fishing is another source of income for the family. Elisapeta’s sons are good fishermen who go out four days a week, depending on the weather. The fish are sold at the village near the road, or at the fish market.

Elisapeta decided that having two businesses was insurance against setbacks, such as a slow or low yield, or an illness that would prevent her sons from fishing for a week.

There are eleven people in Elisapeta’s family, and the sons don’t have permanent jobs. Through her two businesses, they generate revenue that helps cover family expenses and other faalavelaves (communal family events or obligations such as births, funerals, repairing or building a home).

BUsiness is going well!

Entrepreneur: Elisapeta Maiava
Location: Faleula, Samoa

Elisapeta is still running her successful fishing and vegetable garden businesses. The loan that she received has helped to pay for fishing nets and equipment, chemicals for the garden, and vegetable seeds. She grows tomatoes, beans, and cabbage on her land. The vegetables are sold from her house, and she has many regular customers who come to purchase her produce. Fishing is the family’s other source of income and her sons help to fish on most days of the week. Elisapeta ties the fish into strings of 20 and sells them at the market for 25 Tala (11 USD) each. Elisapeta enjoys the fishing business and wants to focus more on fishing, as it brings in more income to pay for the family’s living costs.
