Taua is fifty-eight years old. She has three children, and they are all married with families of their own. The family’s taro plantation is their main source of income. Only one person in this extended family has a job outside the small family farm. Taua believes that it is investment in growing the taro plantation that will help her raise the standard of living for her children and grandchildren. Three times a week, the family sells their taro crop at the local market. Taro is a staple of the Samoan diet, and there is always ample demand for their supply. Taua is applying for a loan so that she can make some basic improvements to their plantation tools. She wishes to purchase additional fencing, bush knives and gloves.
