Lina Yeun's Group

My name is Katie Davis and I am a Kiva Fellow (KF7) volunteering in Phnom Penh, Cambodia for 4 months at Kiva field partner AMK. I recently had the opportunity to visit the Kandal Province of Cambodia.

I recently had the opportunity to visit the Sdao Kanleang Village in Kandal Province to interview Kiva borrowers. I spoke with Mrs. Lina Yeun, who is the Village Bank President of a group of 4 entrepreneurs. Mrs. Yeun’s vegetable re-selling business is going very well. Farmers in her village bring her their vegetables – primarily potatoes and carrots – and she takes them to the local market to resell.

Mrs. Yeun estimates her profits to be around $10 a day, which is above average compared to other women I spoke with in the same village. Mrs. Yeun said that there are other vegetable re-sellers in her community so there is some competition, but as of right now the market supports the supply and demand in Sdao Kanleang.

I asked Mrs. Yeun what her hopes are for her children in the future. She said that she would like her kids to work for a bank like AMK. (I promise this was not a rigged answer - AMK loan officers are well known and respected in the villages they serve so this is high praise indeed!)
