With an average age of 30 and four children, the members of Yankadi come from traditional extended families with in-laws, brothers and sisters in Koumantou villlage in Bougouni prefecture (the third administrative region of the Republic of Mali). The women of Yankadi are involved in a variety of income-generating activities ranging from small restaurants to selling seasonings, not to mention occasionally selling fruit and vegetables. The women have been Soro Yiriwaso partners for the last two years and they are on their fourth loan. All of the previous loans were successfully repaid. With this new loan they would like to buy seasonings from Sikasso on market day. They make a 50 Franc CFA profit on every kilogram of onions sold; each kilogram of fish sold brings in 250 Francs CFA. The cake saleswomen buy a 25 kilogram bag of wheat flour, as well as shea butter and yeast to make their baked goods. They use five kilograms of flour each Wednesday, market day, for sales. The members of Yankadi make an average profit of 30,000 Francs CFA per month. This allows them to reimburse their loan and meet certain household needs (health, education, clothing, etc). In the future each of these women would like to become a wholesaler of seasonings, wheat flour, and other items popular with the local population.
