Akua Adutwumwaa

Akua Adutwumwaa is forty-six years old. She is married and has given birth to six children – all boys. Almost all her children are out of school. The last born has yet to complete junior high school. She lives together with some of her children and her husband in Offinso, a business and farming community in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.

Akua’s husband is a farmer as well as a sewing machine repairer in their community. Akua works to help her husband provide for the family. She is a fish monger and also sells vegetables on a small table top. She sells in a shed in the local market square. She procures her goods from big-time fish mongers in Kumasi who sell at wholesale prices.

Akua has been in business for two years. According to Akua, most of her customers are food vendors and households in her community. With the loan,she wants to purchase tilapia and other fish in bulk on a visit to the big towns to reduce frequent travel. This, she also believes, would enable her to save more money to pay for the education of her last born.
