This is Kadiatu Koroma, Abdul Kamara, Fatmata Koroma, Koloneh Sesay, and Mohamed Sesay. They named their group Courage. These entrepreneurs have received several loans from Kiva through SMT. The previous loans have had meaningful impacts in the lives of these people. The last loan they received from Kiva through SMT was for Le 800,000.00 each. Now, they are requesting a loan of Le 1,000,000.00 each to enable them to further strengthen their businesses.

Kadiatu Koroma (left) is the leader of this group. Kadiatu is 30 years of age. She was born in Makeni, northern Sierra Leone. She is married to a local court chairman. The 2 of them have 2 children. One of their children is in Junior Secondary School II (JSS II) and the other is in class VI. She has been in business for 6 years now. Kadiatu sells firewood, plastics, water, and gara lappers (locally dyed clothes).

With this loan of Le 1,000,000.00, Kadiatu will use it to buy one truck load of firewood and 3 “pieces” (a piece is about 30 yards of white cotton used in making the gara lappers). A truck load of firewood costs Le 500,000 in a village called Madit, about 5 miles from Makeni. A piece of “brillian” (the white cotton is called brillian) costs Le 80,000. She will use some of the remaining sum to buy inks, powder, and soda and pay workers who designed the clothes with different styles.

So far, Kadiatu faces no major challenges in her business. Business is going fine for her, and she enjoys doing it.

With the profit she makes, Kadiatu uses part of it to repay her loan, pay her children’s school fees, and do things that make her life happy.
