Mr. Ousmane Cissé is 22 years old and unmarried. He lives at his father's home, in a large traditional family together with his mother and his 5 brothers, in the Sébougou neighborhood in the city of Ségou (fourth administrative region of the Republic of Mali).
He dropped out of school in 8th grade to help his older brother who was running a retail shop. After two years of learning the ins and outs of this business, he's been running his own shop for 3 years, in the Angoulême neighborhood. His shop is located near CAN 2002 boulevard, the business center in Ségou. His shop is located next to a drugstore, a beverage store, and a hair salon. His revenues are very important since his shop is much frequented due to its accessibility, and also since he's got a high business sense.
To meet an ever-increasing customer demand, he turned to the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso seven months ago. After a first individual loan that was repaid without problems, he's now seeking his second individual loan.
He intends to use it to buy one ton of sugar, 3 boxes of pasta, and 10 boxes of green peas. He gets his supplies in Bamako (the capital of Mali) or directly in Ségou. Mr. Ousmane Cissé sells for cash and on credit to a clientele consisting of both men and women.
He foresees realizing a monthly profit of XOF 250'000 (ca US$ 500), which will enable him to help his father with the family expenses. His ambition is to diversify his business by selling gas and cereals, in addition to his current business.

Journal Update for Ousmane Cissé

Entrepreneur: Ousmane Cissé
Location: Segou, Mali

Greetings from Ousmane Cissé in Ségou, Mali! I met with Ousmane at his grocery store on May 5, 2009. Since receiving his loan in January, Ousmane has purchased millet in large quantities, a large barrel of cooking oil, and other products for his store.

Ousmane’s mother is a Soro Yiriwaso solidarity group client, and it was she who suggested that he take out a loan from the institution to expand his business. Before receiving this loan, Ousmane’s monthly profits were 45000 CFA. Since putting this loan to work, however, his profits have risen to 75000 CFA per month, an increase of 66.7%! Ousmane attributes this dramatic rise in profits to several things. Firstly, the loan has allowed him to purchase items in larger quantities at cheaper prices. Secondly, he now carries a more diverse range of items, and can satisfy a larger clientele. Finally, Ousmane’s store is located on a principal access road in a fairly wealthy neighborhood of Ségou. With his large stock of rice, a staple of the Malian diet, Ousmane is a go-to for locals.

In addition to repaying his loan, Ousmane has used his profits to help pay for some of his family’s expenses (though he does not yet have a wife or children of his own), and to build shelves in his store. To Ousmane, his store is everything, and he hopes that his business will continue to prosper and evolve.
