Born on August 8, 1978, Mr. Mamadou TRAORE lives with his wife and child in a large, traditional, extended family in Sanoubougou II, one of the working-class districts of the city of Sikasso (third administrative region of the Republic of Mali). After obtaining his D.E.F. (a middle-school diploma), he had no direction. He thus came to earning an income. He tried several kinds of work without success and then decided to become initiated in the commerce of mobile phones and accessories (handset skins, batteries, chargers, earphones, etc.) five years ago now. He works at the crossroads of the new marketplace of Médine where he has a shop. He is in high demand by his customers for the quality of his goods.

Concerned about improving satisfaction in his burgeoning customer base, he decided to join the micro-finance institution Soro Yiriwaso five months ago. He is on his first individual loan. With it, he intends to buy 5 mobile phones, 1 box of skins, 1 box of batteries, 10 chargers, and 1 dozen earphones, etc. He gets his goods in Bamako (capital of Mali) and resells them to customers generally composed of young people and especially vendors.

With this loan, he envisions realizing a monthly profit of 120,000 francs CFA that will be used essentially to pay the loan interest and to invest the rest in his business.

Journal Update for Mamadou Traoré

Entrepreneur: Mamadou Traore
Location: Sikasso, Mali

Greetings from Mamadou Traoré in Sikasso, Mali! I met with Mamadou at his boutique on Friday, May 1, 2009. Since receiving his loan in December, Mamadou has purchased all kinds of merchandise for his shop: phones and accessories for them (batteries, phone covers, and chargers), and clocks.

Before receiving his loan, Mamadou’s monthly profit was about 150000 CFA. Since taking on this loan, however, his monthly profits have risen to 250000 CFA per month, an increase of 67%! He attributes this rise to the increased variety of products that he offers in his store, as he is able to satisy the needs of more clients. As such, his clientele has grown.

In addition to repaying his loan, Mamadou will use his profits to care for his family—including school expenses—and will reinvest some of the profits into his business. He would like to be able to continue to satisfy his family’s needs, and hopes eventually to be able to be able to supply his store from foreign sources, which are cheaper than those to which he has access in Mali.
