Evelyn Awa, 35, is married and has given birth to three children – a boy and two girls. She says two of her children are in basic school. Evelyn’s husband is a commercial driver, and she lives with her family in Konongo in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.

She is in the business of trading, mainly plantains. She buys food from the farmers in her community and nearby towns, and then Evelyn treks to Accra to sell to local ‘chop bar’ (restaurant) operators. She has been in business for barely two years. She says when plantains become scarce, she buys other food items like cassava, yam, etceteras. Evelyn wants to buy plantains on larger scale so that she can sell to a number of customers and increase her profit margin.
