Ms. Do Thi Thuy on the Difficulties of Raising Cows

Entrepreneur: Đô Thi Thuy Group
Location: Dong Anh- Ha Noi, Viet Nam

When visiting borrowers in Viet Nam, it is quite easy to tell whose husband is most likely a construction worker; they have bigger and nicer houses than their neighbors! I am not sure if this is because construction is a well paying job or if it is because the husbands can get good deals on building supplies and build their own houses, thus saving money. My guess is that it’s the latter. Ms. Do Thi Thuy’s house was one such house.

After being invited inside and served a nice cup of warm green tea (it was relatively chilly and wet day that day) I began interviewing Ms. Do. Ms. Do is primarily a farmer; she raises vegetables and rice but supplements her income by raising animals. Ms. Do used her Kiva loan to help her purchase a breeding cow so that she can sustainably raise calves and sell them. Her income since she received her loan has increased from 600,000 VND per month (roughly $33) to 1,000,000 VND per month (roughly $57), and she uses the extra income to increase her standard of living such as buying new furniture as well as paying for her children’s school fees.

Ms. Do told me that the most difficult aspect of raising cows is feeding them. Since cows are not raised in fields in Viet Nam and are thus kept at the house, Ms. Do must either bring garden clippings (usually corn stalks) to the cows or take the cows out to communal land to graze on grasses. When I arrived I noticed a large basket of cut grass in her courtyard, and then realized that it was meant to feed her cows.

Below is a video that I shot of Ms. Do where she is discussing how difficult it is to raise cows. Unfortunately it is in Vietnamese, but if I get it translated soon I will put the transcript in the comments section. Enjoy!
