The Bolivia Group was created through a merchant association located in the center of the city of La Paz called Feria de Boliva (Market of Bolivia) which led to the name of the Village Bank. The group members participate in various types of businesses like that of the group president Miranh who sells perfume. The other group members work in such activities as the sales of clothing, shoes, cosmetics, books and computers. The market is full of people who offer consumable products but these women offer a variety of high quality products at low prices so they don't fear the competition. The purpose of this loan is to purchase merchandise and to improve their work stands since their customers demand to be attended in better conditions. The group members have experience in support groups since they have participated in other financial entities; since they have a good credit record, the Agrocapital Foundation offers them the opportunity to improve their and their families' quality of life.

Update on Jeanett from Grupo Bolivia

Entrepreneur: Grupo Bolivia Group
Location: Location Undisclosed, Bolivia

I met with one member of Grupo Bolivia, Jeanett, who has a shoe store in a mini-mall on the busy main street in La Paz, Bolivia. Though small, the store is packed with leather boots and shoes of all styles and has glass walls so clients can see the merchandise while walking by the store. Jeanett greeted me with a smile, and explained that she sells the shoes and boots that her husband makes. She used to be a house maid, but once the family was able to access capital, they started this business in which they earn more money. The couple buys their leather from Peru, heels from Argentina, and embellishments from Brazil in order to make high quality shoes and boots, since the scarce raw material that is available in Bolivia is of low quality. With her loan, Jeanett and her husband were able to buy more leather and make a higher quantity of shoes. The couple has four children, two of which are dependents, and the extra profits have definitely improved the family’s quality of life, allowing them to buy luxuries for their home, like cable television and Internet. In addition, Jeanett has been able to send the children to a private school. In Bolivia, classes are often cancelled at public schools due to the numerous protests that regularly halt business in the city. In contrast, private schools hold regular classes and have a substantially better quality of education. Jeanett was very excited to share the plans she already has in place to start exporting shoes to the bigger markets of Chile and Peru with the future credit she will receive.
