Ketty is a member of the Sumaqcha (“Beautiful” in Quechua) Village Bank. She is 25 years old and lives with her common-law husband and their two children. Her husband drives a motorcycle taxi, and Ketty sells coca leaves near a busy intersection in the city of Ayacucho. Coca leaves are used to make tea or chewed for energy to ward off hunger, and to fight the symptoms of altitude sickness. She buys the leaves from ENACO (Peru’s National Coca Company) for 120 or 125 soles per 25-pound bag. She usually sells about 25 pounds per day and earns about 25 soles (US $8.30) per day.
Ketty is requesting a loan of 2000 soles to buy more coca leaves, to have some maintenance performed on her motorcycle, and to buy new motorcycle tires. Her goal for the future is to buy her own car, hopefully in June or July of 2009. She would then rent out the motorcycle to another driver, and her husband would use the car as a taxi.
