San Miguel De Mayocc Group

Most of the community is involved in commerce or fruit production; the fruit is sold mainly in Huanta. There is also some livestock in the area, including a number of guinea pig farms.

Alberta and Candelaria are two members of the San Miguel de Mayocc Village Bank. Alberta is married with four children, who are 20, 16, 14 and 10 years old. She raises and sells guinea pigs, a business she has been involved in for the past three years. At first, the business was difficult, since her guinea pigs had fleas, but now the problem is under control, thanks in part to loans from FINCA, which she used to buy medicine. She plans to use her current loan of 200 soles to fix the irrigation system for her alfalfa, which she grows to feed the guinea pigs. Her dreams for the future are for her children to graduate with professional degrees, and to have a large guinea pig farm.

Candelaria is married with five children, who are 25, 23, 20, 18 and 16 years old. She also has a guinea pig farm; she buys young animals and fattens them up to resell. Like Alberta, Candelaria had problems when she first started raising guinea pigs because they got sick and died and she didn’t know how to keep them healthy. She has learned a lot about the animals since then, and they don’t get sick any more. She plans to use her loan of 500 soles to buy supplements for her guinea pigs, so that she can fatten them up and sell them in the city of Ayacucho. Like Alberta, Candelaria’s dreams for the future are for her children to graduate with professional degrees and to have a large guinea pig farm.
