Ms. Tran Thi Thuynh

Entrepreneur: Trần Thị Thuynh Group
Location: Bac Ninh, Viet Nam

Recently I had the pleasure in meeting Ms. Tran Thi Thuynh, the leader of this group. She was chosen to become the group leader because her fellow members believe that Ms. Tran is a very responsible person as well as someone to admire. Ms. Tran, like many other SEDA borrowers, learned about the microloans that SEDA has available via Kiva from the local branch of the Women’s Union. SEDA has a close partnership with the Women’s Union to provide microfinance services to communities around Hanoi, the capital city.

Ms. Tran has two main businesses that she takes part in: raising livestock and making traditional rice cakes which are very tasty I might add! She used her Kiva loan to purchase a few pigs and to buy their feed. She has been raising pigs for the past 7 years and making cakes for the past 8. Prior to the cakes and pigs she was just a rice farmer (which she still does as well!). Currently she has six pigs and hopes to make them large enough so that she can sell them for their meat.

Ms. Tran actually has a decent income. Her current income, thanks to her Kiva loans, is around 3,000,000 VND per month which is about $170. Prior to her Kiva loans her income was smaller, but unfortunately she cannot remember exactly what her income was before. She is using her extra income by reinvesting in her business by purchasing pig feed and materials for her cake business. She is also saving close to 2,000,000 VND per month for her son who is currently finishing up his degree in economics at University. She is saving so that she can purchase him a lap-top so that he has a better chance to get a good job. When asked what her hopes are for the future she said that she hopes SEDA will be able to continue providing her loans so that she can continue to increase her income.
