Ms. Ngô Thị Mai

Entrepreneur: Ngô Thị Mai Group
Location: Bac Ninh, Viet Nam

On a recent visit to SEDA’s branch office I decided to stop by and visit a client that lived on the way to another meeting point a credit officer and I needed to get to. Her name was Ms. Ngô Thị Mai and she had a beautiful family that I had the pleasure of spending a day with. My plan was to only meet with her for a small time as we were on our way to somewhere else, but I couldn’t help it when she asked me to join her as she tended to her fields. We first met at her home and she quickly set me up with some delicious tea. Her husband had just arrived home for lunch and was speaking with his friend before they headed off to another construction site. He wanted to prove his experience and told me to look at the hard calluses all over his hands.

Ms. Ms. Ngô Thị Mai, her husband and their three children aged 16, 18 and 20 live in a small home where they also raise their pigs and chickens. She told me that she used the loan from Kiva to buy the pigs when they were little. Now the pigs have grown and have piglets of their own which she intends on selling when they grow enough. In addition to the pigs she uses whatever money is left from her loans to buy scrap metal which she resells to people in the village. The metal is important to people because it used to make all sorts of things around the house and farm such as tools, hooks and fence repairs.

Ms. Ms. Ngô Thị Mai told me that she was happy she was selected as the group leader and that she was honored when her group told her that it was because she was very responsible. The money she has made from her business has allowed her to buy a refrigerator and a used motorbike which the family needed. She told me that she was very happy to have access to this loan but that she needed larger loans to be able to sustain her pig business. She might have to leave SEDA if they aren’t able to double her loan on the next cycle, and she would have to opt for a private bank or another MFI.

Ms. Ms. Ngô Thị Mai told me that she hopes that she will be able to continue to borrow from SEDA and that she will be able to expand her business. When we visited her beautiful fields she took the time to show me how delicately she takes care of each plant. Her plan is to one day build a small greenhouse where she will be able to grow her plants even in the winter, when it is too cold. Ms. Ms. Ngô Thị Mai explained that simple necessities are difficult to afford like furniture and food and that often the family’s inability to afford these things makes life very stressful for everyone. She dreams that one day she will not have to worry about these issues and one day she will even be able to send all her children to a university.
