The Nuevo Dia (“New Day”) Village Bank (loan group) has 17 members, all women, and is currently beginning its fourth loan cycle. The group members are involved in a variety of businesses: they sell food, clothing, grains, dry goods, handicrafts, and books, and work as cosmetologists. They sell their wares from home, on the street, from house to house, and in markets.

Miriam is 25 years old and lives with her partner and their child. Miriam is an artisan and makes retablos (small, brightly painted wooden altarpieces depicting scenes of traditional Ayacuchan life) and knits items from alpaca wool. She works with her sisters, and they sell their wares from home. Miriam will use her loan to buy wool and paints.

Lourdes is 29 years old and lives with her partner and their daughter. Lourdes has a restaurant in a rented space. She works there everyday with her sister and one cook. Lourdes will use her loan to buy sugar and rice.

The group members need loans of different amounts. Many are requesting 200, 400 or 800 soles, and the group as a whole is requesting a total of 7,800 soles. Group members will use their loans to buy sugar, rice, wheat, barley, corn, wool, dyes, sweaters and pants. Some of the women’s dreams are to own their own homes, to buy plots of land, to open stores in their homes, to export their products, and for their children to grow up to be working professionals.
