Jorge's New Bread Truck

Entrepreneur: Jorge Orozco Sanchez
Location: Managua, Nicaragua

As you may remember, you helped fund a loan on Kiva earlier this year to Jorge Orozco Sanchez, which he requested to purchase items for his bread-selling business and which was paid back in full last month. On Friday, we got the chance to check in with Jorge to see how his business is going. He talked to us about his most recent loan with Kiva’s field partner, AFODENIC, which allowed him to purchase a truck. (He has a more recent loan than the one you helped fund, which did go to purchase other equipment for his business, as intended. We hope you will be interested in reading about Jorge’s latest loan anyway.)

Jorge sells a variety of bread products (and delicious cookies!) in his neighborhood every day, for about three hours. He purchases the goods from a nearby panaderia, or bakery, and then travels through the area so people who are in their homes can buy from him. Jorge started off with just a bicycle with a large metal basket attached to the front, then got a small vehicle, and now has this large red truck, which allows him to fit much more than the bicycle basket did—both were in his garage when we visited, so we got to see how big of a difference there is. The truck has a large covered space, open in the back, where Jorge keeps the blue plastic crates that hold the products he sells.

Jorge has been selling bread in his neighborhood for two years. Unfortunately, he told us that sales are low right now; on a good day, he sells about 250 items, but lately he has been selling about 150 per day. In the long run, Jorge would like to be able to buy two more trucks of this type, so his 14-year-old son (who is in school) can drive one and so he can hire an employee to drive the other. For now, he plans to use his next loan to cover the price of gas.

Check out a picture of Jorge and his new truck below. Thank you for reading this journal update!
