Chico was born in Sofala, is 33 years old and the father of a 1 year and 8 month old son. He moved to Namaacha, a village on the border with Swaziland and entered the job market as a teacher.

After completing elementary school, Chico began at a school for catholic priests in his province. Years later, after completing the 3rd year of the superior level in the same school in Maputo, he abandoned his studies, alleging that he could not handle the demands of the course. In 2002, Chico was s hired as a 9th grade Portuguese Language teacher at the Escola Secundária de Namaacha (Secondary School of Namaacha) where he works from midday to 5:30pm. He lives with his wife Lúcia, who is 24 years old and taking a teacher training course. They live in a rented house with two nephews – one is 17 years old and the other is 6 – the oldest of whom goes to school.

Chico has a salary of 4700 MZN and despite having a lot of expenses, he still manages to save 500 MZN a month and has managed to buy a piece of land in Boane with his savings on which to build his own house. However, due to the high cost of living he hasn’t managed to begin the construction and in 2007 when he came across Hluvuku when they opened a branch in Namaacha and was able to obtain financing.

This is Chico’s second loan with Hluvuku and his first with Kiva. The first loan, for 15000 MZN, was used to purchase construction materials to begin the building works and this second loan, for 20,000 MZN, will be used for the same purpose. He is confident that he will pay it back before it is due and will request another loan to build a stall at his house from which he will sell necessities in order to increase his family’s income. In the future, Chico intends to complete his studies so that he can have a stable salary.
