Faizan Mai Manzoor Ahmad Group

Faizan Mai baji is a 43-year-old woman who lives in Shah Rukn, Pakistan. She owns a two-room brick house where she has been living for the past 10 years. She is the mother of one son who is 19 years old and works in an oil mill, where he packs cooking oil in cans. Faizan baji’s husband,Manzoor Ahmad, is an animal seller with 20 years of experience in his business.

Faizan baji has a milk business. She has a buffalo at her home and she gets milk from her by getting up early in the morning. She sells the milk in the milk shops and charges 36 Pakistani Rupees for each kilogram of milk. She successfully repaid her first loan from Asasah, a microfinance institute in Pakistan. Now she is applying for a loan to buy another buffalo to expand her milk business.

She is a the leader of a five-person loan group. Noreen Mai baji wants a loan to buy a buffalo and sell the milk. Bashiran baji and Sakina Mai baji each want a loan to buy fertilizer to resell. Naseem Mai baji wants a loan to buy an auto-rickshaw (a local three-wheeled motor vehicle).

This is a group loan. The loan funds will be distributed among the group members, each of whom will invest in her own business. The members mutually guarantee one another's loans. If one member does not repay, the other members are responsible.

Note: "Baji," which means "older sister," is a term of respect for women in Pakistan.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a group of individuals bound by a group guarantee.
