Kiva Journal Update for Francisco Monasterio Quispe

Entrepreneur: Francisco Monasterio Quispe
Location: La Paz, Bolivia

As a Kiva Fellow working with Kiva’s local partner MFI, Emprender, I recently had the opportunity to visit with Francisco Monasterio Quispe, a Kiva funded entrepreneur.

Francisco is the brother in law of Carmen, another Kiva entrepreneur and not only do they live in the same house, but their businesses are very similar. Getting to Francisco’s house was trickier than I imagined. There are no buses that climb up the steep hill towards the brick making factories high above La Paz. I am still getting accustomed to the altitude here, so we had to stop ever 20 meters or so for me to catch my breath! Of course, the Emprender loan officer, Maria Elena had no trouble climbing up such a hill even though she recently had a baby!

When we finally arrived at his house, it was lovely to sit down and learn about his sister in-law’s business before Francisco arrived home from lunch.

He works, along with most of his neighbors in a brick factory. Here he helps collect dirt, fill molds and dry bricks. Each factory produces nearly 10,000 bricks a day. Francisco used his Kiva funded loan to buy bricks from his employer and other local factories and to bring them, with a rented truck to Cochabamba once a week. Cochabamba is about 9 hours from La Paz. He has a hard time estimating his profits from this business but it very clear that it has improved his earnings. In the next few years he hopes to save enough to rent an oven and make his own bricks instead of doing them for someone else.

I very much enjoyed meeting Francisco and was impressed by the arduous and difficult nature of working with bricks. Thank you for supporting Kiva, Emprender and Francisco.
