Mrs. Sarun Nop Village Bank Group

Hi,

I am a Kiva Fellow at AMK Cambodia. Last week we had the pleasure of visiting the Sarun Nop group in the Takeo province of Cambodia. The journey took us down many long and dusty roads through small villages and past countless waving villagers and school children in their uniforms. We then had to walk about a kilometre through some beautiful fields to a small patch of woodland where the village chief lived, so that we could meet one of the group, Srey Hem. On the way we saw plenty of workers in the field and even a piglet licking a cow on the face!

Srey Hem borrowed 600,000 Cambodian Rial (about $146) to buy chickens to sell in the market. Her income has gone up by 33% as a result of this, and her living conditions are better. She has completed work on her house and her plantation is better.

She also told us about Sov Nourng, another group member, who is enjoying great success as a chicken middleman in the local village, buying chickens from the villagers and selling them at the market.
