Nusrat baji is a 29-year-old woman who resides in Walton in Lahore, Pakistan, where she has been living for the past 20 years. Her husband, Maqsood Ahmad, is a butcher who runs a butcher shop in the community. He sells chicken meat.

Nusrat baji has seven children: five daughters and two sons. Her eldest son works with his father in his butcher shop. The others are enrolled in a local school in her neighborhood. Nusrat baji embroiders dresses on orders. She takes orders from her neighborhood and charges a fee of $4 per dress. She makes four dresses in a month. She invests part of her income in her husband’s business and uses some to meet household expenses. She has successfully repaid her four previous loans from Asasah (a microfinance institute of Pakistan). Now she is applying for a loan to buy more chickens to expand her husband’s business.

She is joined in her loan group by three more members. Maryam baji and Suraiya baji each want a loan to buy a digital camera for their photo studios. Majeedan baji wants a loan to buy seasonal vegetables for her vegetable business.

This is a group loan. The loan funds will be distributed among the group members, each of whom will invest in her own business. The members mutually guarantee one another's loans. If one member does not repay, the other members are responsible.

Note: "Baji," which means "older sister," is a term of respect for women in Pakistan.
