This village bank, which consists of ten members, is located in Phsar village in Kampong Chhnang Province. The members plan to use the loan for various purposes. Mrs. Sory Chea is the village bank president, selected by the members. She is 54 years old and the mother of four children, two of whom are laborers while the others are enrolled in the local school. Her husband, Mr. Soeung Chanseng, is a duck breeder. Mrs. Sory Chea sells chickens in the local market. Since her business is going well, she wants to expand; she has a lot of customers and increased demand. In order to support this business, Mrs. Sory Chea decided to ask for a loan to buy more chickens to sell to her customers.

This is a group loan consisting of mainly end-of-term loans. These borrowers are not required to pay any principal on the loan until the very end of the loan term. End-of-term (EoT) loans are AMK’s main product because they are the most beneficial to Cambodia’s poor. These loans allow borrowers to repay portions of the principal whenever they are financially able to do so. Most clients start to make their payments many months before the end of the loan term. Almost all of AMK’s clients make their payments on time. AMK has an overall delinquency rate of only 0.09% and AMK has a default rate of 0% on Kiva.

About Group Loans
In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a group of individuals bound by a group guarantee. Under this arrangement, each member of the group supports one another and is responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members if someone is delinquent or defaults. Learn more

Update on Loan to Sory Chea Village Bank

Entrepreneur: Mrs. Sory Chea Village Bank Group
Location: Phsar Village, Cambodia

We had a chance to catch up with some village members from the Phsar Village of Cambodia’s Kompong Chhnang Province as we followed an AMK loan officer on a repayment visit. We found out that the group loan leader for the Sory Chea Village Group Loan, Sory Chea, ran away from the village and her group loan members. Since the other group members guaranteed the loan, they will now have to repay her portion as well. One of the group members got very angry upon hearing this news and yelled at the loan officer and group members. While it was a tense moment, Cambodians are always quick to smile and she gave me a big, warm smile as she rode away in her bike.

Immediately after that incident, we caught up with another group loan member, Sokhom Sin, after her repayment meeting. She is the mother of six children and has a grocery store. She used the loan to buy more merchandise for her grocery store and the loan has helped her business enough to positively impact her living conditions. Watch the video to see the impact your loan has made!
