Update on Hilda Cahuaza Tello from Pucallpa, Peru

Entrepreneur: Hilda Cahuaza Tello
Location: Callería - Ucayali, Peru

When I visited Hilda one morning last week she was very busy serving customers at her small outdoor restaurant on a busy street corner near downtown Pucallpa. Hilda serves breakfast every day from 6:00 to 10:00 am. On the weekends, Hilda does BBQs and the restaurant stays open over the lunch hour. Hilda and I were able to speak for a while about how things are going with her business after she closed up shop around 10:00.

Hilda's restaurant is a shared business venture with her sister. They have had the restaurant for one year. Hilda is very pleased with this business-- she told me that earnings are better than those of other businesses she has had in the past. Hilda also sells Avon products and owns two motorcycle taxis which she rents out to drivers on a daily basis to earn extra income. Hilda and her sister operate their restaurant from a good-sized plot of land where Hilda's sister has her home. Hilda is also building a home on this same lot. When she eventually moves into her new house, Hilda hopes to begin serving lunch as well at the restaurant. In general Hilda's business has been doing well. She has a number of regular customers. Hilda has, however, had to confront some financial difficulties recently due to the ill health of her parents.

Hilda has been working with Manuela Ramos for five years. She is currently paying back a loan of 3000 soles (about $1000), which she shared with her sister. Hilda invested her half of the loan in the construction of her house, which she has been building bit by bit. Hilda hopes to be able to move in next week sometime.

Hilda lives with her husband and two youngest children, aged 17 and 13. Her oldest daughter (aged 23) is married and lives independently. Hilda has many goals, some of which loans from Manuela Ramos have already helped her to achieve (i.e. the construction of her home). Hilda has been very happy working with Manuela Ramos-- she told me that she few household items before her loans from Manuela. Hilda hopes to expand and better her restaurant. She also wants to run a small grocery shop out of her new home-- she thinks that this business will do well as there aren't any other grocery shops in the immediate vicinity. Additionally, Hilda wants to ensure that she can continue paying for her children's education.

Hilda is pictured here in front of her nearly-completed house. To view a list of currently fundraising loans from Hilda's MFI, Manuela Ramos, click Here.
