Tabitha Wambui Muraguri

Tabitha Wambui is 32 years old and single, and has three children. Tabitha lives in Jericho, an informal settlement in Nairobi. Apart from her family, she takes care of her aging mother and three orphaned children from her late sister, who together with her husband passed away in 1999. Since Tabitha is the only close relative they have, she had no choice but to take in her young nephew and two nieces.

Tabitha is a qualified beautician, having trained in one of the leading beauty colleges in Nairobi, Pivot College of Beauty, from 1998 to 2000. She earned a diploma in hairdressing and beauty. Afterward, Tabitha was employed at a leading salon in Nairobi, where she worked for two years and acquired experience.

In 2003, after saving Ksh 60,000, Tabitha rented a stall and bought two driers, two blow driers, five seats and 10 towels. She also bought several hair chemicals and some braids and informed people of her new salon. Most of her clients followed her, and her former workmates also came and joined her, since she could not singlehandedly manage all her customers.

Business has been good to Tabitha, and now she wants to expand, since her place is becoming small as the number of clients increases. This is a chance Tabitha doesn’t want to pass by, since it will increase her income and enable her to feed her family and educate the children.

Tabitha has gotten another stall where she has started operating with one drier and one blow drier. This is overworking her equipment, so she is requesting a loan of Ksh 64,000. With this loan she will be able to purchase the following two driers, two blow driers, chemicals, weaves, towels and chairs. This will boost her services. She will repay the loan within 12 months.
