Resty is a dedicated and happy mother and a hard-working productive farmer. She is 56 years old with ten children and three orphaned grandchildren. Four of her children attend university and two are still in primary school. Her grandchildren are also in primary school.

Kasanje is a beautiful rural farming community in the hills near Entebbe. Resty grows matoke, beans, maize and cassava and she raises goats, pigs and cows on her plot overlooking Lake Victoria. She also produces a local distilled brew made from millet called Malwa. Her husband farms coffee and vanilla, and operates a small retail shop in the nearby village.

Resty is using this loan to help pay wages for two workers that help her on the farm. She will also buy millet and wants to buy another goat. She has been a Pearl client since 2000. Small loans have helped her buy the plot she grows her crops on, which have provided the income needed to support her children through school. Without the loans, she would not be able to sustain or grown her business.

Well-dressed, engaging and conversational, Resty is a natural leader. She is Treasurer in the Gwali Mutala group, the women’s leader in the community parish and the Treasurer of a national agriculture association. She hopes to start construction on a new home one day and buy more plots of land for her children to sow. She is always looking for new ways to build her farm and would like more animals. School fees and caring for her orphaned grandchildren take most of her income, leaving little for savings.
