Chuma Group

Mengi Tarimo, age 34, is married with three children (ages 8, 4 and 2). He also cares for two children of his late brother (ages 16 and 14). He has a butcher business which he started in 1998. He works from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily and is able to make around $333 per month.

In the past, Mengi has taken out five loans from Tujijenge Tanzania. He used the loans to open a general store and the butcher shop. He now hopes for a loan to start building a frame for another general store. Mengi will share this loan with his subgroup members, who have butcher shops and cafes. His subgroup is part of a loan group called Chuma. The members of the group hold each other accountable in paying back their loans.

About Group Loans
In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a group of individuals bound by a group guarantee. Under this arrangement, each member of the group supports one another and is responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members if someone is delinquent or defaults. Learn more
