Lorn Vatt, 42, is a widowed grocery seller who lives with her two children. Living in the Battambong province, she typically makes about US$2.50 each day, and her two children who work farming make about US$2.50 each day as well to help support the family. The weather conditions have been difficult in Cambodia this past year and inflation has also been out of control. These factors have played into a difficult economic year for many Cambodians. Lorn Vatt would like a loan of US$1000 to add grocery inventory, and the rest of the money is used to repair the house.

Loan Update

Entrepreneur: Lorn Vatt
Location: Batambong, Cambodia

Lorn Vatt, 42, is a widow living with her two children in Battambang, Cambodia. Lorn grows rice and sells groceries. She requested this loan so she could buy more groceries and repair her house.

I recently visited Lorn to ask about her loan, and to learn more about her businesses. Lorn said she used the loan plus 18000 Thai Bhat (approximately USD $600) that she raised by selling three cows to rebuild her house, a clean, wood and concrete building. Lorn said that she earns about $12.50 per day, but that she must reinvest most of it to buy more groceries. During the peak season, she can earn around twice as much. She doesn’t have any savings because she must make repayments on this loan.

Lorn said that things were improving until the economic crisis came. She said she will be unhappy until she can earn more money so she can pay to treat her son’s illness (a type of chronic headache), and so she can buy better food. Lorn said she doesn’t have any dreams for herself, and that she thinks that her children will continue to be poor farmers because they left school at a young age.
