Suraiya baji is the wife of Mahandi Hassan, and they reside in the city of Borewala in Pakistan. They own a two-room, brick house, and they have lived in the house for the past 25 years. Moreover, they have four children: one son and three daughters. Her son has a motorbike rental business, her oldest daughter is a nurse, and her other two daughters make handmade carpets. Her husband has a livestock sales business. Specifically, he sells animals such as buffaloes and goats to earn a profit.

Suraiya baji, meanwhile, helps her daughters make their carpets. In particular, she provides materials (e.g., threads and sketches), which she purchases from the local market. Notably, Suraiya baji has already successfully repaid two prior loans from Asasah, a microfinance institution in Pakistan. Now she is applying for another loan for the benefit of her husband's business so that he can buy a buffalo to resell.

She is joined in her loan group by three other members: Haleema baji seeks a loan to buy raw materials (e.g., flour, potatoes, cooking oil, and spices) for her Punjabi food-selling business (she makes samosas and pakodas); Asma baji requests a loan to buy more clothes to resell; and Rubina baji is in need of a loan to buy a decorative embroidery machine to make embroidered dresses. This is a group loan; as such, the loan proceeds will be distributed amongst the group members, each of whom will invest in her own business. Importantly, the group members mutually guarantee one another's loans; as a result, if one group member does not repay her portion of the loan, then the other members are responsible for curing the arrears.

About Group Loans
In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a group of individuals bound by a group guarantee. Under this arrangement, each member of the group supports one another and is responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members if someone is delinquent or defaults. Learn more
