Kiva Journal Update for Banco Comunal Baloncito

Entrepreneur: Banco Comunal Baloncito Group
Location: Santa Cruz, Bolivia

As a Kiva Fellow working with Kiva’s local partner MFI in Bolivia, Emprender, I recently had the opportunity to visit with Cristina, a member of the Banco Comunal Baloncito Group.

Cristina is the president of this group, which means that they meet every other week in her yard to submit their payments to Miriam, their loan officer. She has a nice big tree out front and both Miriam and I sought some shade under it after our long and really hot bus ride to her home.

Cristina went to an academy in Santa Cruz, a larger city about an hour from her home, to learn how to sew professionally about 10 years ago. Since that time she has run her own business sewing. Other women who have many clients and cannot fill all the orders, bring material and specifications to Cristina who makes the items on contract. She also has many of her own clients which are primarily neighbors who know that she sews. They often come with a specific fabric and an idea of what they want and Cristina designs the garment per their requests. She also does a lot of simple tasks like hemming pants and skirts. When enough people express interest she also teaches sewing courses.

With the income from her business she supports her four children. One has already married, two are studying in university and one is still in highschool.

She used her loan to repair her bathroom but plans to use her next loan to buy another sewing machine that will make more professional cuffs on sweaters.

I was sorry not to meet the others in her group, but shared in her excitement about another group member who is just about to have a baby. Since I visited Cristina, they paid off their loan in full. Thank you for supporting them!
