Her name is Blanca Nubia Olivia López, she is married, 53 years old, and has a 33 year old daughter who works for herself and does not depend on her mother. Her lifetime partner works in construction. Her goal is to establish a locale where she can earn a greater income, and make improvements such as buying a refrigerator because the one she uses now does not belong to her but to the different houses that distribute such products as Coca-Cola and Pepsi to her. Her intentions include obtaining household products for her home by saving the little she earns.

The business she dedicates herself to is the sale of poultry, as well as juices, sodas, and beer. She has been in business for four years, having started by her own motivation as she has always liked to work independently and find her own way to survie. She started with poultry sales which generates income, and then decided to start another venture with the sale of sodas, juices and beer as these are in high demand in her hometown of León. Her reason for requesting a loan is for working capital to stay active in her business, as she needs to increase the quantity of Coca-Cola and Pepsi products she stocks to satisfy the different tastes of her customer base. She turns to this financing by way of the Fundación León 2000 which has provided her with loan assistance.

Important Information About This Loan
In mid 2008, a movement began in Nicaragua called “Movimiento No Pago” (a movement for non-payment of loans). This movement, supported mostly by farmers of the north of Nicaragua with ties to the left-wing party in Nicaragua, has been organizing protests and making it difficult for some branches of microfinance institutions to operate normally. This movement has been fed by the global the economic crisis, which has made it more difficult for Nicaraguans to pay back their loans. This group has submitted a law to the government to create a moratorium on debt repayment. If passed, the law could have a severe effect on the microfinance industry and banking sector in Nicaragua. Recent information indicates that the situation may be improving as the President of Nicaragua has spoken out against this law and would not support its passage in its current form. The network of microfinance institutions in Nicaragua (ASOMIF) has been negotiating with the government in support of an alternative proposal. Kiva, along with 25 other funders from 9 countries, has signed onto a letter to the Nicaraguan government urging a resolution to this situation without enacting a moratorium on debt repayment. The potential passage of the debt moratorium increases the risk of lending in Nicaragua. A loan update for Blanca Nubia Olivas Lopez

Entrepreneur: Blanca Nubia Olivas Lopez
Location: Leon, Nicaragua

It has been almost 5 months since Blanca Nubia Olivas Lopez first received a Kiva loan, and in that time, her business has improved markedly. After recently visiting her to see the micro loan effect on her business, Blanca Nubia expressed to me how much the loan of $175 has helped broaden her ability to compete with similar general store businesses in the area. She has succeeded in increasing profits by 20-25% over the course of the loan, primarily through the competitive purchase and sale for profit of a greater variety of general store goods.

Blanca Nubia would like to personally thank all Kiva lenders who helped her achieve a level of professional success and personal fulfillment unimaginable before receiving a micro loan. She hopes to garner further support from Kiva lenders in future small business endeavors. Please enjoy the borrower update video that explains how the loan has affected her business, and depicts her dreams for the future.
