The Benkan group is made up of married women with an average age of 25 and two children. These women live in traditional extended families with their husband, children and other relatives in the village of Marka-Coungo in the Dioila prefecture (part of Koulikoro, the second administrative region of the Republic of Mali). Related through marriage, these women specialize in buying and selling condiments. They are on their seventh solidarity loan (group loan) with the Soro Yiriwaso (Kiva Field Partner) loan program, and all their previous loans have been fully repaid.

With this loan, they want to buy 500kg of cooking salt, 50kg of tomato concentrate, 100kg of smoked fish, 400kg of onions and various other condiments in the markets of Bamako (capital of Mali). They retail their goods in the Marka-Coungo market for cash, or sometimes for credit, to a predominantly female clientele. They expect to make a profit per cycle of 20,000 FCFA ($40) each, which will allow them to pay off the loan interest and help their husbands with the family expenses (school fees, healthcare costs and food bills).
