The nine members (five married, three single, and one widow) of the Badenya group are on average 29 years old, have two children, and live mostly in traditional extended families in the Bamanan kin neighborhood of Kirango Markala of Ségou prefecture (the fourth economic region of Mali). The women know each other through family and neighborhood connections and are involved in the same business activity, selling fancy pagnes wax (colorful textiles used to make clothes that are very sought after in Africa), as well as second-hand clothes. In addition to clothing, they also sometimes sell firewood. In hopes of increasing the size of their business, the group members decided to work with Soro Yiriwaso and they are now on their third loan cycle after having properly repaid the two previous loans. The women plan to use this loan to buy 40 bolts of fancy pagne wax fabric and five parcels of second-hand clothing, commonly known as "Yougou Yougou." They will buy their stock of fabric and clothing in Bamako (the capital of Mali) and Ségou from wholesalers. Their products are sold in the weekly market at Diamarabougou Markala and the daily market at Kirango Markala to a clientele made up of men and women buying on cash, credit, and retail. The women each plan to make an average monthly profit of 30,000 FCFA which will be used to buy school supplies for their children.
