Patrick is about 40 years old, married with 5 children. He also cares for the son of his brother who is infected with HIV and unable to care for him. Three of his children are in school--one in high school and two in primary school. It is sometimes difficult for him to pay his children's school fees, and with the additional profits after he receives the loan, he hopes to be better able to educate his children.

Patrick started his shop in 1990, renting a small shop and selling foods in Kachumbala town center. He is just finishing construction on a shop on a plot of land nextdoor, which he was able to purchase with his profits. He hopes to move into that space within the next couple of weeks.

He hires help, usually about five employees, on a daily basis to assist with weighing the purchases and buying more goods from nearby villages. Some farmers bring their crops directly to the shop, and he then sells the staple foods to individual buyers as well as wholesalers traveling to Kenya, etc.

A great christmas in the Okiring house

Entrepreneur: Patrick Okiring
Location: Mbale, Uganda

Patrick’s business is going very well. He has not had any trouble paying back his loan, and has had additional money to pay for one child’s school fees (a big improvement!). Also, the extra profits from his business enabled his family to have a great Christmas, and for this he was very thankful. The picture below is Patrick and his family at their home in rural Uganda.

Previously, Patrick was renting the space for his business of selling “G nuts” (very similar to peanuts). He was able to use part of the loan to construct a building of his own, and is hoping to finish two more rooms on the building that he may use for more space or that he may rent out for additional income. Also, he previously could only conduct commerce in his small village. He has now been able to expand to other villages and go to the Kenyan border to sell or trade his G nuts.

Patrick said his message was obvious – to send great thanks to all those that have helped him and his family! When I left Patrick’s business he insisted on giving me 3 kilos of the G nuts he grows and sells as a token of his thanks. They’re great!

Best-

Loan Refunded

Entrepreneur: Patrick Okiring
Location: Mbale, Uganda

This loan has been refunded for the following reason:

As you may be aware, each business on Kiva's website is posted by one of Kiva's 60+ Field Partners in 39 developing countries. A Field Partner is an independent microfinance institution that has a history of lending to the poor for a social purpose. They screen each entrepreneur, post his/her profile on the Kiva website, and administer your loan.

Kiva routinely audits each Field Partner to ensure your loan is being dutifully administered to the entrepreneur you've selected. In the course of auditing our Field Partner, Women's Initiative to Eradicate Poverty (WITEP) in Uganda, Kiva discovered that some entrepreneurs were not receiving the full amount of their loans.

This violates Kiva's policies and we have terminated our relationship with WITEP. All of the loans made to entrepreneurs served by this Field Partner have been refunded. We hope you realize that our audit uncovered a true exception to the norm; the vast majority of our Field Partners administer your loans with the highest integrity. Kiva will continue to audit Field Partners to ensure your loan is being dutifully administered and to make our website a model for transparency in international development.

To help inform your choice of Field Partner as well as entrepreneur, we have launched a new feature on the site which helps you evaluate the Field Partner's performance in your lending decision. See www.kiva.org/about/partners/ for details.

We hope that you give lending to the working poor another chance by re-lending your Kiva Credit to a new entrepreneur on our site.
