The group “Forever United” was formed for three women who all sell supplies in a popular market in La Paz, Bolivia.

The women sell supplies on credit. Since their first loan, they have demonstrated responsibility and are an experienced group who are requesting their sixth loan. Marilyn is a single mother. Her business is her only source of income to support her children. She is the leader of the group and is very responsible, thanks to her business and the micro loans that have been successful. Vilma and Magna also contribute financially to their homes, making them feel very useful and appreciative of their jobs. The loan they are requesting will be used to purchase supplies at wholesale that they will sell for the Day of the Dead holiday, a day when low class families make baked goods in their homes in order to celebrate.

Kiva Journal Update for Unidos Por Siempre Group

Entrepreneur: Unidos Por Siempre Group
Location: La Paz, Bolivia

As a Kiva Fellow working with Kiva’s local partner MFI in Bolivia, Emprender, I recently had the opportunity to visit with Marylin, a Kiva funded entrepreneur.

Marylin works with her aunt Wilma to sell various household items. These two women go to different vendors in various markets, and to their extended family and friends to see what items are hard to get, or overly expensive. Then, they provide a lay away plan for their client, up to 300 bolivianos or about $42. If someone would like a product that they can’t afford up front, Marylin and Wilma allow them to pay in weekly installments in addition to fetching that hard to find object.

Such items include furniture, cooking equipment, and specific clothes.

These two women live very near each other in a high neighborhood in La Paz. They both speak fondly of how nice it is to work with family. Wilma, slightly older than Marylin has only one son, age 33 living with her, while Marylin supports her two children. Wilma’s elderly mother also lives with them and sometimes requires expensive medical treatments.

Thank you for supporting Kiva, Emprender and Marylin. I very much enjoyed meeting her and her aunt and spending a few lovely minutes in their home.
