Ms. Hoang Thi Hong, a Pig Farmer

Entrepreneur: Thi Hong Hoang Group
Location: Dong Anh- Ha Noi, Viet Nam

As I walked into Ms. Hoan Thi Hong’s courtyard in her village, all I could hear was pounding German electrica music coming from a neighbor’s house. It was the last thing I had expected to hear in this village, but nonetheless, there it was! After becoming accustomed to the loud music we started our journaling interview.

Ms. Hoan, the group leader of this group, lives at home with her five children, ages 13 to 30, and with her husband. Like many other SEDA borrowers she requested her loan for supplemental income generation by raising pigs and chickens. Specifically, she used her Kiva loan to buy five piglets which she currently is raising and said in three months time they would be big enough to process for their meat. After our interview she showed me her pigs, which live in a pig house in her house’s courtyard, and they were contentedly munching on the various pig feed, corn, and other vegetable mixture she had given them for the day.

According to Ms. Hoan, the biggest risk for her business is if the pigs get sick; apparently nine months ago some of her pigs became sick and died, and even though she knew what disease they had, she could not treat them because the medicine is too expensive. Now that she is able to raise more pigs than before because of her loan, she is saving some of the extra income to be able to purchase medicines in the future (the rest of the extra income is being saved to purchase more pigs, meaning she’s re-investing back into her business!)

As our interview came to a close, Ms. Hoang told me what her hopes for the future were and her simple reply was thus: she hopes that one day she can have a better job besides also being a farmer so that she can make more money and raise even more pigs. Her secret hope, she said, is to become a tailor, just like her daughter-in-law. Maybe one day, she and her daughter-in-law can run a successful tailor shop with future Kiva loans!
