Nineteen members of Chamka Tamao Village in Kampong Chhnang Province got together to form a group loan, which each will use for different purposes. Mr. Pen Samuth is the village bank president selected by the members. He is 37 years old and the father of three children, one of whom attends the local school while the remaining two are too young to work or study, being just three and five years old. He is a motorbike taxi driver and pig breeder. Since his second business is doing well, he wants to expand it sois requesting a loan to buy two more pigs to breed. His wife, Mrs. Ti Back Theary, is a housewife who cooks delicious food for her household.

Two members in this village bank loan have end-of-term loans and the rest have monthly payment loans. They are not required to pay any principal on the loan until the very end of the loan term. End-of-term (EoT) loans are AMK’s main product because it is the most beneficial to Cambodia’s poor. It allows them to repay portions of the principal whenever they are financially able to. Most clients start to make payments many months before the end of the loan term. Almost all of AMK’s clients make their payments on time. AMK has a delinquency rate of only 0.09% and AMK has a default rate of 0% on Kiva.

About Group Loans
In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a group of individuals bound by a group guarantee. Under this arrangement, each member of the group supports one another and is responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members if someone is delinquent or defaults. Learn more

Update on Loan to Pen Samuth Village Bank

Entrepreneur: Mr. Pen Samuth's Village Bank Group
Location: Chamka Tamao Village, Cambodia

Pen Samuth (leader of the Pen Samuth Village Bank) has paid back his portion of the group loan early!

We had a chance to visit Mr. Pen Samuth in the Chamka Tamao Village of Cambodia’s Kompong Chhnang Province. When we met with him, his family was just finishing their traditional Khmer breakfast.

Mr. Pen Samuth is a hard worker; he is a taxi driver, local wedding photographer, grocery store owner, and recently became a pig breeder. He used his loan from AMK to buy pigs to breed. He told us that he successfully sold his pigs for around $500 USD and experienced an increase in household income. As a result, he has been able to start a savings for his family. He hopes to take out another loan with AMK so that he can buy more groceries to sell. Many of the others in the Chamka Tamao village, like Pen Samuth, run various businesses to generate multiple streams of income.

His wife stays at home as a homemaker and takes care of the children. Together they have three children, one who attends school and two who are too young to work or study.

Pen Samuth and his family thank the Kiva lenders for funding their loan through AMK! Let’s congratulate them on all their hard work! Watch the video to catch part of our interview with him.

Be sure to read more about Kiva's excellent partner MFI in Cambodia, AMK (http://www.kiva.org/about/aboutPartner?id=109).

And, make another loan to one of AMK's currently fundraising clients! (http://www.kiva.org/app.php?page=businesses&partner_id=109&status=fundRaising&sortBy=New+to+Old)
