Ban Nuoen

Ban Nuoen, 48, is married and lives about 124 miles from the capital of Phnom Penh city, Cambodia. Living in the Kampong Cham, she and her husband typically make US$5 each day. She says every day she and her husband walk their bicycle to purchase recycling items from house to house in the village and sell them to the recycling plant. This couple together has seven children, three of who are married and no longer stay at home. Three other children are employed and only one is still a student. Besides their recycling business they also grow rice to earn a living as well, but their farming is just to support their family members.

Ban Nuoen would like to take out a loan through Kiva via CREDIT, a local partner, of US$1000 to purchase a motorbike to transport the recycling items. This will be an easier and faster way to transport the products. The rest of the money will be used to purchase fertilizers for her farm. For her future plans, she wants her children to complete at least high school and if they need to continue, she will strongly support them, even though she knows that she will spend a lot, as she wants them to get better jobs.
