Kuy Thoeun, 34, is a farmer and lives about 124 miles from Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. Her husband works as a motor-taxi driver and makes US$3 per day. The couple has two young children. Kuy typically makes less than US$1 per day, because planting rice is difficult due to bad weather conditions. She uses a lot of labor, but earns too little to support her family. Kuy also faces problems related to water supply, and even during the rainy season there is sometimes not enough water for plantation. Inflation is among the main factors contributing to the low profits from farming in the area, since the prices of fertilizers and rice seeds have skyrocketed. Most of the farmers therefore produce less output. Kuy is currently asking for a loan of US$500 to be able to purchase a motorbike for her husband's motor-taxi business.
