Chan Poeun

Chan Poeun, 33, lives with her husband and five children in Kampong Chhnang, Cambodia. Chan polishes rice, and her husband was recently hired as a district consultant. Chan requested this loan to purchase more rice to de-husk and polish.

I recently visited Chan's house to learn more about her loan and business. She wasn't at home, so I spoke with her husband, who told me that the family bought rice from farmers and middlemen at a price of $0.14 per kilogram, and is de-husking and polishing it a little bit at a time, reselling it at a price of about $0.25 / kg. Her husband said the family saves about $600 per year.

Her husband, who had a voice and smile that seemed to be "made" for politics, was recently promoted to the position of District Consultant. He used to be the sub-district chief, but left the position to work with his wife. However, he said a colleague called him one month ago and offered him the new position, which he gladly accepted. He started soon after receiving the offer, and will continue for five years.

In the future, Chan's husband wants to help expand his wife's rice business, but he expects to be very busy with his work.
