Loan Update

Entrepreneur: Kung Mab
Location: Batambong, Cambodia

Kung Mab, 33, lives with his wife and two children in Battambang, Cambodia. Kung is a recycler, and his wife buys and sells vegetables. Kung requested this loan so he could have more money to purchase recyclable items to resell.

I recently visited Kung's home to ask about his loan and his businesses. Kung wasn't home, so I spoke with his wife, who told me that he used $900 of the loan to buy a motorcycle. Kung uses it to drive around the village and collect recyclable materials. He used the remainder of the loan to buy vegetables for his wife's business.

Kung earns about $5 per day, and his wife earns around $2. They typically save around $12 per month, but it's difficult to keep it up because his wife has kidney problems. They have paid over $75 to date to pay for treatment (a very large amount of money for this family).

In the past five years, life has improved significantly for the family; they have a new motorcycle, better food to eat, and more business chances. In the future, Kung's wife wants to buy a cart so she can sell things like rice, fish paste, and salt door-to-door.
