Mambo from Tanzania! This is 26-year-old Scolastica B. Mwakipesile from Kyela, divorced with one child aged 12. Since 2005, Scolastica has been operating a shop selling items such as rice, maize flour, cooking oil, and salt. Assisted by her sister, she works at the business 12 hours per day, 6 days per week and earns about $110 each month.

Scolastica is requesting a loan of $800 to purchase more food items in bulk and as well as open a cosmetics shop alongside her shop. She thanks you for your support!

SELFINA has taken a lead role as a pioneer of micro-credit in Tanzania through Micro-Leasing. The organization is engaged in the economic empowerment of women in Tanzania through the provision of a leasing and leaseback microfinance facility. Customs and traditions in Tanzania make it difficult for women to own land and assets; thus they are termed non-creditworthy by financial institutions. This leads to poor financial support and poor access to basic needs and services for women with low incomes. One of the primary advantages of microleasing is that it allows clients to use the equipment as collateral for future loans with SELFINA, thus enabling them to borrow larger sums in the future.

Dear lenders,

Mambo (Greetings!) from Kyela, Tanzania and from SELFINA! Thank you for your loan through Kiva to Scolatica Mwakipesile, a SELFINA client and micro-entrepreneur. The purpose of this journal is to update you on Scolatica and the status of her business.

As you know, your generosity helped Scolatica obtain a loan of $800 in November 2008. She is running a cereals business and used the loan to purchase crops in bulk.

She works at her business for 12 hours per day, 6 days per week. Since she took out the loan, her business has been doing well and Scolatica’s monthly profits have increased from about $150 to approximately $190. She has used these extra profits to repay her loan, pay house rent, water and electricity bills.

In the future, she is planning to request a loan of $1000 from SELFINA with which she plans to buy more crops in bulk. On the personal front, her family is doing well. She is married and has one child. Scolatica dreams about being able to enter plans for family here. SELFINA aims to continue to assist Scolatica and other women like her, and empower them towards financial security and increased confidence through microloans. Thank you very much for supporting Scolatica! To continue to support women like her and lend to SELFINA borrowers, please click here:
